anxiety_disorder_385x261We have all heard this buzzword, but many of us still don’t know what a panic attack is.  Is it like a killer bee attack?  What about an attack of a fifty foot woman, or zombies?  Is a panic attack similar to an attack of conscience?  The answer to all of the above is yes.

When trying to imagine what are panic attacks, try and picture a thermometer next to your body.  Instead of measuring your temperature, though, this device measures your stress level.  For most people, your stress level will be at a bearable level.  If you get bad news, or someone says something rude to you, your stress level will rise.  If you suffer from panic attacks, your stress level will rise sometimes for no reason, and other times it will go up disproportionately to the bad even that happened to you.  When that level gets too high, you may experience a panic attack.

Symptoms of a panic attack include elevated heart rate, sweating hands and feet, a clenched jaw and an impending sense of doom or injustice.  Just like a race car that has it’s motor revved too high for too long, a panic attack can be seriously damaging and distressing for the person experiencing it.  Believe me, if you ever have to ask yourself “am I having a panic attack?” the answer is no, because you will be able to distinguish the gripping terror of a panic attack from just being nervous or worried.

Now that we know what are panic attacks, we should be more sympathetic towards those who experience these bouts of fleeting shock and awe.  Get them a pillow if they fall down, and advise them to take better care of their emotions and to seek professional help as soon as they can.
