Excessive usage and reliance on a particular toxic chemical/drug that affects the behaviour, nervous system and a number of other body functions is known as substance abuse. Such chemicals and drugs leave dangerous effects on the psychological and physical health of a person.

Abuse of various substances such as alcohol, tobacco, various medicines and heroin etc. is prevailing in the society. Individuals usually begin to use drugs or any other substance for just fun, because of peer pressure, inquisitiveness or on other basis, but because of their act, sometimes the society eventually ends up in paying a considerable cost.

A lot of professionals, up-and-coming doctors, scientists or intelligent juvenile students, when get involved in substance abuse, forget all about their ambition of life and eventually face failure in life due to their drug abuse. A large number of them start to commit crimes, catch a fatal disease, or even lose their close relationships etc. They get unable to understand their true prospect, leave their missions, forget all about individual aims, and eventually destroy their futures.

Indulging in serious crimes is one of the major lives destroying effect of substance abuse. From various researches and studies, it has been revealed that a substance abuser has approximately eighteen times greater chances of committing or indulging into a criminal activity. An individual, who is not so active and is not quite social, is less likely to commit a crime in comparison to an intense, socially active and economically strong substance addict.

The mind altering effects of drugs are the root cause of violent crimes, committed by the abuser. Many of the substance abusers get into crimes like sexual assault and domestic violence under the influence of drugs. Sometimes, they get life sentence due to their crime or even years of jail. The abilities and talent of a substance abuser remains undiscovered and the person either becomes mentally retarded or commits suicide.

Due to substance abuse, many people lose their lives, get punished, go through guilt and catch deadly diseases similar to HIV and AIDS. With the substance abuse, it is not just the life of the addict that goes through this entire nuisance, but it also involves his family members and loved ones who have to suffer. It is a sad calamity for the family, acquaintances and for the abusers themselves. There is no positive sign of substance abuse, because all it does is destroys the lives of many people.
