In previous years it was believed that obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms were rare because the condition was rare.  However, it has become apparent in recent times that this disorder is actually a lot more widespread than was thought.  There are millions of people living in the United Sates who have varying degrees of this condition.  People living with this disorder can have a hard time functioning normally in a normal world.  It is also extremely difficult for family members and friends to put up with the many symptoms that manifest as a result of the condition.

Obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms are what lead a sufferer to get a diagnosis.  There are many people who have a clear cut set of behavior patterns that make such a diagnosis obvious.  There are also people who need to undergo a battery of psychiatric tests in order to get a diagnosis.  Obsessive compulsive disorder is a disorder that is brought about by extreme anxiety.  When such an individual feels stress they have to carry out specific behavior in order to feel in control and to alleviate the stress.  The person may fear germs or disorder.  Such people would want to wash their hands all the time or shower all the time.  Another stress reliever for such individuals is to spend hours tidying the home.  Such individuals spend a lot of time lining things up exactly.
