Don’t Let This 21st Century Stress Syndrome Get the Better of You

Panic and Depression No Comments »

Can’t beat the fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, and depression? If so, your underlying problem may be adrenal fatigue or sometimes call adrenaline stress. A 20th century stress syndrome many people are struggling with these days. With the economic system getting worse more people will suffer from this syndrome. Unlike our ancestors, we live under a constant strain of stress.

Rather than the intermittent stress like the ones our ancestors had, we now live in a world where we’re always over-worked, under-nourished, open to environmental toxins, worrying about others – with no relief! Could life be any worse?

Stress is governed by our adrenal glands. Two small walnut-sized glands located on top of each kidney, and are important control centers for many of the body’s hormones. These glands produce adrenaline and give the body the “fight or flight” mode by increasing production of adrenaline.

When your adrenal glands are healthy, they give you instant energy, sharpen your senses, increase your heart rate and control your blood pressure. All stress demands use of the adrenal gland.

Your life consists of a endless list of demands. They might include lack of sleep, a hard-to-please boss, layoffs, financial pressures, personality conflicts, yo-yo dieting, relationship upheaval, or a death or illness of a loved one.

Other stresses could include illness or infection, skipping meals, too much caffeine and carbs, digestive problems, over-exercise, unresolved emotional issues from your past or present and much more. Because of all this, your adrenal glands are over worked.

Guilt, pain from past hurts, self-destructive habits, undecided relationship troubles – your past and present emotional feelings serve as an ever-present stressor. It’s important to deal with this type of stress.

Adrenal fatigue may also be a element in many related conditions, including fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, premature menopause and others. It may also produce a host of other nasty symptoms, from acne to hair loss.

Do you think you have adrenal fatigue? That depends. Most people suffer stress, it’s the long-term stress that causes adrenal fatigue or adrenaline stress.

If you feel happy and well, have even supply of get-up-and-go and your emotions are healthy, you sleep soundly seven to nine hours a night, and wake up feeling rested, recover well from stress, and keep a healthy weight without dieting, then your adrenals are probably doing well.

On the other hand, if your energy drags during the day, you feel emotionally unstable most of the time, you sleep poorly or less than seven hours a night, can’t lose weight even while dieting, use caffeine or sugars to help “perk-you-up” – you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue.

What Are the Common Medications Used for Anxiety Disorder

Panic and Depression No Comments »

Generally, most psychiatrists will prescribe benzodiazepines for anxiety, with the most popular being Ativan (lorazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam). While these medications are usually the first choice, there are however different options used that were not originally created to treat anxiety.

Quite often, antidepressants are prescribed to treat anxiety. These medications are not as likely to cause dependency or abuse and generally take a longer period of time to be effective. The other difference between anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications is that antidepressants can be taken for a sudden onset of anxiety symptoms.

SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are antidepressant drugs most commonly prescribed for anxiety. These include Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, and Lexapro. SSRIs can treat generalized anxiety disorder as well as more serious anxiety disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Side effects include weight gain, stomach upset and nausea, sexual problems, sleepiness and dizziness, nervousness, and headaches. Even more serious side effects can occur, such as the possibility of suicidal thoughts, hostility, and aggression. As with benzodiazepines, sometimes depression and anxiety symptoms are increased with antidepressants.

How SSRIs work:

This class of antidepressants attempts to correct the chemical imbalance involving serotonin by making more of the neurotransmitter available to the receptor sites of the post-synaptic nerve.

A new medication called BuSpar or Buspirone is being used to treat anxiety. This drug is similar to SSRIs as it reduces serotonin in the brain as well as reducing dopamine which is responsible for increasing heart rate and blood pressure. Another benefit to this medication is that it does not cause loss of memory, coordination or have a tendency to become addictive. It also does not cause side effects such as drowsiness like other anti-anxiety medications such as Ativan. The problem however is that BuSpar is only used for generalized anxiety disorder.

Oftentimes, Beta Blockers are prescribed as a treatment for anxiety as this disorder is known for increasing blood pressure and creating heart problems. They are also beneficial in alleviating other symptoms of anxiety including dizziness, sweating, trembling voice, and rapid heart rate. The most optimum use of this medication is in the treatment of phobias. Beta Blockers also come with a risk of side effects which include nausea, sleepiness, lightheadedness, and a very slow pulse.

Talk with your psychiatrist. He or she will ask you a series of questions and may conduct some physical tests to determine which medication, if any, is necessary. Remember to be patient as some drugs take several weeks to go into effect. However, it is important to let your doctor know if you dont feel that your medication is working or if you feel that it is causing adverse effects. You may have to switch to another prescription within the same class of drugs or to an entirely different class altogether.
