Bipolar Disorder: An Overview

Panic and Depression No Comments »

Bipolar disorder is a type of brain disorder that can make the most ordinary and normal of moods appear very extreme. Sometimes referred to as manic depression or manic-depressive illness, this disorder is characterized by unusual extremes and highs and lows of mood, activity levels, energy and the ability to do regular everyday tasks such as get out of bed and go to work in the morning.

Researchers and the medical community are not completely sure as to what causes bipolar disorder to start in the first place. Most people who develop it come from a family where another member has it so the familial link has been established. But family history or a genetic predisposition towards the disorder are not the only factors that gives rise to it. This is a most definitely baffling disorder to diagnose.

Bipolar disorder can affect individuals of all different races and ethnic backgrounds. This is a disorder that has nothing to do with socioeconomic status, education level or chosen profession. Bipolar disorder often appears when an individual is in their teenage or young adult years. However it has often been known to show itself in children as young as six years of age and in older adults. Studies have shown that women who suffer from bipolar disorder tend to experience more depression then men do, and are at a higher risk for rapid cycling. Rapid cycling is when a person suffers from four or more mood episodes in any given year. Mood episodes or simply episodes are the name given to the mood swings that an individual who has been diagnosed with this disorder goes through.

Bipolar disorder is frequently mistaken for depression. Depression can be sneaky in that it can sometimes obscure other elements that point to a bipolar diagnosis. If substance abuse is added to the picture then it can become even murkier and may remain undiagnosed for a lengthy period of time.

A diagnosis for an individual who exhibits the classic symptoms of bipolar disorder, which include cycles of elation and depressive mood swings, is relatively easy to make because it follows a pattern. However not all patients show symptoms that are as clear cut. For example, there are patients who do suffer from bipolar disorder but their symptoms are anything but classic. Mania mood swings can be mild episodes that do not really seem to point to a problem and sometimes can be attributed to circumstances or a person’s unique personality.

Bipolar depression, also known as manic depressive disorder, is a serious form of depression that can’t be ignored. Manic depressive psychosis can affect all aspects of a person’s life, from their job to their relationships.

The Right Acne Scar Cure For Your Skin Is In Existence, You Must Be Well-versed And Do Something

Panic and Depression No Comments »

Acne is a condition that is not only traumatic on the skin, but on the emotions as well. Most everyone has experienced it at some point in his or her life, though the occurrence and severity can vary from mild and infrequent to painful and chronic. In every situation though, one is left with unsightly scars that take effort to heal and fade, and which take a toll on self-confidence. If you’re looking for an acne scar cure, look at some of the treatments below to both prevent the severity of the formation, as well as to speed up the healing time.

1. Wear sun protection.

Hyper pigmentation scars can and will darken if they are not protected from the sun. By wearing sunscreen on a daily basis you are preventing the dark spots from getting any darker. By logic, the darker the spot, the longer it will take to fade away.

2. Don’t pick at scabs.

One of the worst things you can do to worsen the likelihood of full scar healing is to touch and pick at it. Leaving it alone completely is a preventative measure that makes a huge difference. If you pick at a scab before it has sloughed off on its own, then you will be interrupting the skin’s natural healing process, prolonging it, and making the injury itself and subsequent scarring worse.

3. Chemical peels for mild scarring.

This involves the application of acids on the skin in order to shed the top layer of skin and allow a new, healthier layer to emerge. It must be done by a professional and maybe require more than one visit. This is recommended for milder cases of scarring and not for deep puncture scars.

4. Rolled surface.

For those who have serious scarring and rolled, lumpy textures to their skin, subcutaneous incision may make for a smoother appearance. Under local anesthesia, a needle is inserted under the skin and then used to break up the fibrous tissue that causes the uneven surface.

5. Punch excision.

Traditionally called icepick scars, these give most chronic acne sufferers the most frustration. An effective acne scar cure is a technique called punch excision works to remove your pitted area with a small biopsy-style tool, and then the remaining wound is left to heal back together into a smoother surface. Any scarring that results will be very light and negligible.

As you can see, chronic acne does not have to leave you feeling bereft. Though the resulting scars can be debilitating on the soul and spirit, be aware than there are options out there that can help in a significant way. Talk to your dermatologist to assess your situation and see which option will work for you.
