If you’re seriously depressed, some things you find in mental self help books can help you. But those alone are not going to be enough. You need expert treatment for the serious condition you have. A blocked artery might prompt you to read about nutrition, but you still also need surgery.

We could not presume to state that hypnotherapy will help everyone. But depression help books offer the same advice to everyone who reads them. How do they know that one of their tips won’t actually make you feel worse? They can’t.

One of the major problems with depression self help is that you can’t prescribe medication to yourself. Some drug therapies like antidepressants can be a huge help when you’re suffering with depression.

In fact, some people can’t feel better without the help they receive from antidepressants and other medication like pills for anxiety and panic. If you try depression help and your mental disorder is severe enough that you need medication, any good results won’t last long. But self help means helping yourself.

With outpatient programs and depression self help, you still have to deal with the day to day stresses in your life. You might start to feel uplifted when you go to see your counselor, but then you come home. The good feelings you had can fade quickly beneath the pile of bills, chores and problems that you face.

Depression Help Books. Depression help is something that could be potentially harmful, if you put too much hope in it. There’s nothing wrong with reading self help books. You may even find some concepts that can help you feel better at least for a little while.

But if you had heart disease or diabetes, you wouldn’t forego medical treatment to read self help books about how to handle these ailments. You may read about them, but you’d probably also see your doctor, change your behavior and take any necessary medication. Depression help should be seen in the same light.
